2.76 is the only clear glass flowerpot bottle in my collection and was almost certainly used for some  sort of ‘Eau de Vie’. It has a glass tipped pontil scar unlike many of my other bottles that have glass blowpipe pontil scars. The date is probably late 18th C.

Two features here, first the blueing in the kick up, this is glassgall which is the result of an excess of sodium sulphate (Na2 SO4) in the molten metal and is usually seen on bottles that are made at the end of a batch. Both bottles have it. The other feature  is the long splinter on the neck which was produced when the bottle was separated from the blowpipe, this splinter runs under the string rim which was applied over it. The whole was then fire-polished prior to annealing.

When I got this bottle the script was so faint it was barely perceptible to the naked eye but luckily some mordant used in the original paint had left an indelible mark on the glass outlining the letters and pattern. I restored the script by filling in between the outlines with Armenian bole and gilding revealing ‘EAU DE CREFFON’ . In the 18th century double S was written double F, so we have ‘EAU DE CRESSON’ which was probably some water cress based remedy, the bunch of grapes could mean that it was an alcohol based concoction. Cheers ---- Tasty !! . Any other suggestions ?
